You are correct sir! That rule is one of the major causes of players playing AM forever. Why move up to a division where you'll have a hard time even cashing when you can stick around in MA1 and beat up on players whose ratings show that you'll out play them by over 10 strokes EACH ROUND in a tournament?

Oh I agree with you there, when you said that there should be a MA2 division, it sounded more like you were concerned with lower rated players taking spots up in MA1 that should wait their turn, sign up later and be in MA2. So maybe I'm confused on your point. Maybe that was butterlazer's thinking too? I think anyone should be able to play up in division, right? I think I'm just confused, sorry. I hate when someone SHOULD play up and doesn't...but them's the rules.

I'm one of those high rated players in the MA1 field... Cane me, Cane me ;) I am not even sure I can play this tournament but since I live in Vancouver now, I had to sign up just in case. I am not the same player I was 2 years ago. Full time job, coaching, 2 kids, married life, back to back to back to back injuries and full time rehab have taken it's toll on me and disc golf. My discs have been on strike for quite a while. Played my 2nd round of the year yesterday. And Pier has never been nice to me. I have less than 20 total rounds there in my life... That's my excuse... I will be lucky to place in the top 10 if I play... If I dont, lucky wait lister... But the TD will be informed well in advance of my status if they are reading this post ;)

Wait, wait... Jeff Elliot is playing MM1. Some of us moved to MA1 from MM1 to save you guys the further beatings. Wanna be upset at someone, perhaps don't look so far from home? :)

and just who do you think signed up Sandy for MM1? :posting:

Besides, you are completely off topic. A move from MA1 to MM1 is in no way moving up to Pro, which is what I am talking about. The massive filed sizes in MA1 where less than half actually qualify to play in the division, but are instead "playing up" :headbang:, are what I am talking about. This situation helps keep the top MA1 players from making the jump to MPO IMnsHO.

We've beaten the head of this zombie horse now shall we go for the full body treatment next?

i would just like to say thank you so much, Dan Brown, for holding these spots. i am so terribly disappointed that i am unable to claim one of them. we are really lucky that our TDs prize our involvement so highly that they hold spots like this for us (by "us" i mean "womenfolk")... there's some people out there that think it should just be first come, first served no matter what your gender... so ladies, be very very grateful we live in oregon and get treated so darn well.

The course should be back to the summer layout early next week!

My idea was to keep the course the same for all three rounds(consistency). With mostly long placements and a few in short(speed of play).

3. L - Left or Right? About the same distance.

5. Straight up or Left? Again about the same distance.

Is 13 short for speed of play? Long position makes the hole a separator.

They are close... but one placement is LONGER than the other.
It's the same with hole 5- 291' or 264'. The "L" would mean it's the Longer of the two positions.

Thanks for the question!

I loved the classic Pier all long RCO layout. It is the most difficult, particularly when we could play 16 in the long as well. As an AM player it allowed you to play the exact same course as the Pros all three rounds. It's great fun to see where you would have stacked up score wise. I know I always found that to be interesting. I love playing three round of a great course in the most difficult layout. True test of ones skills for sure. There is always the NAAC in August for alternative layouts. That being said, I am excited to play any layout Dan chooses to go with and appreciate all the hard work and stress he is putting in just so we can have some fun. Props to Dan Brown and his crew!!! Whatever you decide I'm with you.

Good luck to everyone out there this weekend, play well, HAVE FUN, respect the game and your competitors, respect and appreciate the tournaments staff and park. If you see trash on the course Friday during practice rounds please pick it up and help out the guys setting up the course.

Advice: Take extra shoes and socks, have spare towels in ziplock bags, Carry an Umbrella especially Huklab ones as they seem to ward off the rain when carried. Dress in layers as it may warm and cool during your rounds. Carry great snacks and drinks to fuel you during the rounds.

Especially stop by TC to Congratulate Dan Brown for his First Time as the tournament director of the Rose City Open even though this is not his first rodeo.

What happens if in a division there are 10 players tied for 7th place? How do you place them in order on the scoreboard? If you do it by last name alphabetical order then that means Dan Zents and David Zimmerman are always in last place amongst the players they are tied with. This means they are playing 3 cards below Denny Axmacher.

I asked Dave Feldberg about this to see what he would say and he said in that instance, the order of the players that are tied should always be a random shuffle of the players that are tied. If you do alphabetical order or pdga number then the same players get punished every event for having their last name begin with a Z.

Is there an official PDGA guideline for this? Anybody know?

RonTheWhip
May 25th, 2013, 08:03 PM
The rule is any consistently applied method. Completely up to the td, as long as they use that method throughout the whole field.

Yes but that wouldn't work for round 1. I believe that's how they list the players for the final event totals. But if tied players receive the same cash then it's a mute point if you tied for 9th, it doesn't matter if your listed on the 3rd card or the 5th card on the scoreboard at that point.

The object of the game of golf is to move up the scoreboard not down. The flip side to this is that a player may prefer the 2nd card for round 2 because it could be more relaxed where the lead card may have a tense rivalry and more uptight players fighting for 1st place.

Nevertheless, in a big event like BSF with big divisions, there is likely to be up to 12 or more players tied on any given round. There is a widely held belief system that you play better golf while playing with better players. The better players are usually higher up the scoreboard after each consecutive round. So if you are playing at the bottom of a 12 or more player tie, because of your last name letter, then essentially you've been penalized for the starting letter of your last name and not your score.

The flip side of this is that golf is a mental game. Each players cup is either half full or half empty depending on how you look at it so for some players this may be a non issue but for many it could be a big deal. I think with the mental game of golf, when a player looks at the scoreboard and you're tied with 13 players and the player with letter A is on the 3rd card and your last name starts with Z and you're playing your next round on the 6th or 7th card, psychologically even though you're tied with the guy on the 3rd card, it looks as though you're not really doing so well.

At PDGA Worlds the divisions are so large they often divide them into pools. A pool and B pool. What if you were in the middle and you got cut into B pool because of the 1st letter of your last name and your pool had to play the toughest course in the rain while the A pool got to play it in the sun?

Mcw5378

I just ran this tied scoring thing by my friend Jeff Browning who is not playing RCO this year. He brought up an interesting point. He said ranking players on a scoreboard by alphabet is totally unrelated to the play and the score of the player. That is what is essentially wrong with the alphabet system. It defeats the purpose of having a scoreboard in the first place and ranking players in order of their performance.

His idea was that if ranking players on a scoreboard is supposed to reflect a players play, then tied players should be ranked on the final holes on the last card. This would be just like how we decide the order within any given group. So the players with the best scores on the final holes of the previous round would be placed higher up in order. If 1 player tied with 12 players finished their previous round with a triple bogey on the final hole, then they are last amongst the tied players. This makes a little more sense but it's more work for the scoring staff. It does however force the order of the next round to be dictated by the players performance rather than the 1st letter of their last name.

I'm pretty sure this is how they do it in the NBA. If 2 teams finish the regular season with the same winning / losing record, the team that won their last few games would advance over the team that lost their final regular season games. Doesn't that make it performance based? Could you imagine if it were alphabetical? Say the Blazers were tied with the Warriors for regular season wins in the Western Conference, but the Blazers move up a rank because their team name starts with the letter B and the Warriors start with the letter W?

If I were the scoring person it would drive me nuts but I've never been good with numbers! If the entire card were entered into Excell this would be all automated.

So Mcw5378 was actually correct in suggesting that the group order even after round 1 could still be determined by the players play from the previous round!

I think you are way off base on this. It comes down to wins heads up and then division wins etc etc. Has nothing to do with who wins first or last.

If you don't like the way the TD at your favorite events breaks ties then run your own event and do it your way. Were you hoping for an open discussion on this or are you trying to convince people your way is better? Perhaps you were just venting but it feels like you are coming at this thing from a passive aggressive point of view. There is no democracy in these types of decisions.

If this is the biggest issue you have with competitive disc golf play then you are probably wound a little too tight. Everyone should be ready to play every round and play their best regardless of others in their group. Ties are inevitable and should not ruin your event regardless of how they are broken.

After the first round, I usually go to by Alphabetical order, but another option is to sort by PDGA #. After 2nd or third round, I go by the best most recent round then PDGA #.

If you are tied for 9th I think there are bigger things to think of then where your card is placed.

You stated it perfectly that this sport involves a major mental game and part of maturing your game is to get past mental hurdles like being on a lower card. There are several books and studies relating to mental game and almost all of them talk about playing the best you can no matter what card and not playing against the other players on your card. If you beat one person on the top of your card and just try to play to beat them while two cards back a player beats all of you because they set their sights higher it becomes a pretty brutal lesson.

None the less if you have issue with how this TD setup the cards the best way to bring this up is a discussion directly with them off the boards. The discretion used by TD's is theirs and as long as it is uniform I can only say you need to suck it up and choose a different tournament if you can't handle it.

Why not use theirs scores from the previous round?
The hotter players gets rewarded somewhat.

that doesn't work for the 2nd round

Pretty sure that this is the standard used by most TDs. I know that this is what I have always done, as well.
