Woohoo!!! I am super stoked. :jumpspin: This will be my first official ORS tournament. :yay: I am not sure if it's already posted somewhere else, but what do the registration fees look like for this event?

This is going to be a great weekend of disc golf for Oregon.

Less than 3 hours till reg opens. Who will be first? How fast will it fill? Is everybody in the starting blocks waiting for the starters gun to go off?

Well don't mean to get off topic here, but I am just messing with you anyway.
I got no qualms with Discraft and I have thrown them in the past and loved the crush for hyzer skips and the soft magnet for putting, but my throwing style has changed dramatically and so has my choice in discs. I just like to keep it simple and there are so many different types of discs and molds that choosing between the 40 plus discs in two different manufactures is way too much for me. There are so many different Innova discs I have not even thrown let alone Discraft, and it is all about personal choice which is why people choose to throw what they want. The same goes for everything like your political choice, your religion etc. as there is no need to try to convert people to discraft. If they choose to throw it then they will do it because they want and not because of the inconsistency bash. Now back to the registration issue.

Holy #$% this is painful. Anyone know that scene in Office Space where he is waiting for all those windows on his painfully slow computer to close so he can sneak out of the cubicle unscathed????

Haha nice analogy!

I got all the way to the check out page before it froze and I fought with it for about an hour before I scrapped the whole thing and drove back to the office. Got here and tried again and it ran at hyper speed. So we're in!

The Pro side is down to 48. BSF started at noon yesterday with 288 total spots. 20 set aside for mail in AM registrations. 268 left for online. 220 registered in less than 24 hours. I think this says alot for all the hard work that's gone into Oregon disc golf over the last 10 years. Especially the hard work that went into the Oregon series and BSF. I don't think there is an emoticon big enough to express my gratitude.

So basically I once again won't be able to play the BSF?! This is just ridiculous and if I can't even make it into tournaments then honestly I'm just going to give up disc golf seriously. I got home as early as I could from golf practice yesterday about 6:20 and it was already full. That was the absolute earliest I could have signed up and I still didn't have a chance. I really think something needs to be worked out to make this an AM weekend and PRO weekend because if I don't even have time to think about signing up then I'm just not going to try in the future. Obviously I'm frustrated for not getting in so I apologize for ranting..

Brody,

After GNO you really should have known this was a possibility. In the future, you should make arrangements with someone to register you immediately, many of us would have helped you out, had you asked. The TDs gave everyone a warning of when reg was going to open, and I can't think of a more fair way of doing it.

That said, sign up for MPO, there are still a few spots left!

I agree with this... sorta. I think people dead set on improving should always try to play with people better than they are. However, I'd suggest playing in your division until you've at least played the lead card a few times. It helps with pressure management :)

Brody... Like everyone else said, you saw what happened at GNO, you and me both had the same 4 day in advance warning for registration, I registered for someone who couldn't be near a computer during registration, wished you would have asked someone to do that for you. However, this is a good opportunity for you to play the Open division for a fun expirence, you wont be the lowest rated to play Open for sure... It sucks you can't play AMs, but Open has its arms open for you, put down that video camera and be the one being videotaped! whoot whoot...

SO, that leads to an intriguing issue.............
If any one who wants to play Pro, can, then is it hard to believe a percentage of the Pro divisions will fill with AMs that didn't make it into the AM registration? If then the Pro division is now a landing place for players who couldn't get into the AM division, how high of caliber is the that Pro division? Spots that would have gone to Pro players now going to random divisional players. How long will it take to see an 875 (me) rated player on a pro card? I guarantee that is the fastest way to watch a great Pro draw turn into the tournament that no Pro's want to play in. This is a slippery slope for Oregon Pro golf right now. It is a turning point that must be addressed carefully and thoughtfully.
That being said, I don't have a suggestion as to how to fix it, but I do think a CONSTRUCTIVE dialogue about the issue should take place sooner than later.
I love watching the big dogs play. There is nothing like watching the final day and final card at a big event. The electricity in the air. It is palpable. I am clearly going to be a spectator only at that level, but I seem to learn new things every time I see those guys and girls work the course. Part of that experience is knowing that those players had to beat tons of other similar talent to get to the last day, last card. It would feel a little weak to me to watch an NT event where the field just was not as strong as it should be.

I am not dissing any player and I do believe that you should stretch yourself, but I just wonder if an NT is the proper place to do it?

Just a question and quandry to elicit some CONSTRUCTIVE feedback.

Thanks,

"How long will it take to see an 875 (me) rated player on a pro card? I guarantee that is the fastest way to watch a great Pro draw turn into the tournament that no Pro's want to play in. This is a slippery slope for Oregon Pro golf right now."

It already happens at most every tournament. I don't see many pros complaining that there are lower rated players in their division. Why would they mind someone who wouldn't be considered competition contributing to their payout?

So very true what 1000+ rated player would not like to see the Pay Out sweetened by the 875-900 players filling that side out. :D:whistler:

Thanks,

I don't follow. How would a bunch of AMs at the bottom of the division effect the players at the top (aside from contributing to the payout as others have mentioned)?

Lets say... for instance... Barry Shultz and Ken Climo didn't get the memo to sign up for the Fling during in the first 24 hrs of registration, and they go to try to sign up and lo and behold they can't get in because it is full of AMs. I think that's the issue he's thinking of.

I know I'd rather watch Climo play than an 880 rated am, however, I don't think the upper echelon of players should get any preferential treatment.

I can see the logic to holding a certain number of spots for touring pros. I think this has been done before. Probably not necessary for every tournament, but at least for NT and possibly A tier.

Yeah I figured there would be 10-20 spots held for touring pros who didn't register right off the bat like the rest of us. But alot of the touring pros do sign up right away. Let's say 50 register for open. 10 are top touring pros, 10 top regional pros, and 15 top local pros and 15 rated 970 or less, doubt that would impact the top 35 spots. A few ams not gonna create a buzzz unless brody goes pro and shoots lights out like we know he can and makes the lead card??

I think part of this conversation has to do with whether Climo would want to attend in the future if he knows he may likely have to play his first round with 3 local sub-900 dudes, not whether folks would still want to watch the Dude

No TD is retarded enough to put a 1000+ rated player with 3 sub900 players... Maximum would be 2 on a card, but have to have 18 sub900 signed up to cause 2 on same card for the first round... The pros do have some feelings about this, but they remember, they used to be sub900...

If the cards are arranged by rating for the first round, as they should be, the probablility of one 900 rated player ending up on the same card as a 1000 rated player are slim to none.

Why should cards be sorted by rating for the first round? That doesn't make any sense to me at all and I would hate it if this were the case. While we all want to see the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson match-up, the PGA is smart enough to usually force these guys to play with lower rated players in the thought that their play will get them on the same card by tournament's end. This seems like the best method to me.

Allow me to explain.

You take all the cards from a division, put them in order of highest rated to lowest rated. Let's say the Open division takes up 15 holes at 4 per tee. You then take the highest rated player and stick him 1st on the 1st card, 2nd highest rated goes 1st on the 2nd card, third highest 1st on the 3rd card, following this pattern until you get to hole 15 then go back to hole one and start the whole process again. In this scenario the 16th, 31st, and 46th rated players would get to play with the highest rated.

As a TD I think this is the best way to arrange the cards for two reasons, 1. because it creates a nice spread of players based on abilities, 2. you can blame the system if anyone bitches about having to play with any particular individual, not that that ever happens.

So Scot, why is that so improbable, based on your ratings method of sorting for the 1st round? I mean, I was probably exaggerating to say 3 sub-900s (duh) but there could be one or two on a card with a 1000 rated player if, as the discussion originated, ams that didn't get into the A tier rushed to get into the NT, thereby changing the percentage of say, 950 + to 950 - players in an NT event.

I totally agree. I love this method. I got to play with Josh Anton during last years BSF during the first round. He played terribly and I beat him by a couple strokes. :yay:

The likelihood of a sub-900 and 1000+ player being on the same card using this method is almost certain. Which I like. But, you said the opposite in an earlier post.

OK. This makes much more sense to me now and I completely agree with what you are talking about. Of course this would be at the TD's discretion.:biggrin2::posting:

Just for clarification we are talking about 900 rated players and lower.

Using the previous example the worst player on the first card would be the 46th highest rated player, most likely way above 900. So say you have 5 players floating around 900, they would go on holes 10-15, which may or may not have a 1000 rated player sitting 1st on the card. With the exception of the Fling and other NT's how many tourneys have more than ten 1000 rated players or more than five sub-900 players participating in Open?

So I must modify my original statement:

"Outside of the Fling and other NT's the chance of a sub 900 rated player and a 1000 rated player being on the same card for the 1st round using said rating method is slim to none"..... I think :whistler:

Point 1: In an NT event which is a qualifier for the USDGC, should an AM get a spot that a legit PRO would have taken, just because they signed up first. I say dillute the heck out of the AM field if you must but please don't make me watch , well a player like me (875), hack my way around the course in Oregon's only NT event of the year in the PRO division. Besides most 950 rated players are giving up at least 5 strokes a round to the top 25 players anyway. They sure as heck won't come back if the tourney field is weak. We do not want that reputation.

Point 2: Don't think for a second that most Pro players would choose to play against me and my entry fee if they could be on a card with someone who will give them a legitimate competition. They are competitors. Playing against a legitimate AM is not helping them a bit. They want to take their buddys money who is a player of similar caliber. It ain't about the money, it is about kicking someones arse who you know could beat you on any given day. Any one that would be happy with a win against a weak field is not a winner anyway.

Point 3: See point 2

I just hope that when I win my first ADV Masters event it is with the strongest players in the nation. Who knows maybe at the Memorial next year:laughing::laughing:

I can't remember who said it earlier in this thread, but I agree with them. I believe it had to do with if you want to play, then you need to sign up...be on it. I do not believe that just because you play in the pro division that you should get preferential treatment.

Once the reg list is posted, I think you will see that the field will not be anywhere close to weak. Take a gander at the GNO pro division's reg list for example. Chalk full of tough competition...all from Oregon. (Except from Rideout, but we can cut him some slack.)

While the GNO field is huge and full of great local players, to have zero 1000 rated players in a field of 42 is not considered a strong field on the national scale. Spots should be held for touring players because NT stands for National Tour. Climo and Schultz and all of the other top players from around the country cannot be expected to read this forum to know when to register. We should be proud to host these guys and try to attract as many of them as we can. The BSF is so much work and it deserves to be played by the sports best. I love the chance to play against the elite players in disc golf close to home. This is also a great opportunity for all of us to watch the best play in our backyard.

Yes, we held 20 spots for the touring pros who are on tour and are not mining the internet for BSF information all the time, although I would like to believe they are.

I just got the Am players list today and I have yet to receive any thing on the Pro side so I can not comment but I know a few touring pros signed up on line so don't worry. With the spots we have held Jeff Mittl and I will be contacting the Touring pros in order of World Ranking to find out if they would like to join us in May.

The first round of the Pros will be sorted by rating:
1st hole #1, 2nd hole #2, 3rd Hole #3 all the way through the top 18 then the next 18 will fill in the second seed on the holes and the next 18 will follow in behind and so forth. The only difference this year depending on how many Pro Men signed up is who will play on the opposite side of the course from the rest of the Pro field and who will make the cut to join the rest of the field on Saturday. If we have more than 72 open men the rest have to be placed on the other course with the masters and women!!!!!

give the top so many spots to the top rated players
then have a qualifing tournament to give out the rest a month or so ahead of time
raising even more money,, make a modest fee to qualify,,no payouts execpt free entry to divisional winners
